SELECTING THE PROPER VEHICLE
If you're experienced at buying a vehicle with adaptive equipment, chances are you know the process works for you. If you're new to the process, here are a few suggestions for purchasing or leasing a vehicle with adaptive equipment.
1. AQUIRING INFORMATION
Of course your doctor will have input, but the assistance of a Mobility Specialist is very important. Depending on the degree of the disability, it might even be necessary to first get an evaluation from a driver evaluator. It is very important to make sure you physically and psychologically prepared to drive a motor vehicle.

2. TO DRIVE, ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS.
Can I handle the stress of driving? Will I need special modifications to operate a vehicle? Will I be able to transfer from my scooter or wheelchair to the driver's seat?
3. TO BE A PASSENGER, ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS.
Will I be able to transfer to a car or van seat, or will I have to remain in my wheelchair? Will I be able to have good visibility if I remain in my wheelchair? How will someone put my wheelchair or scooter in the vehicle for me.
4. DO I WANT A CAR, MINI-VAN, OR FULL-SIZED?
Too often people go to the local auto dealership and buy what they think fits their needs or what a salesperson recommends. Unfortunately, this vehicle may not meet the modifications necessary for the buyer's needs. Suggestions from a driver evaluator or Adaptive Equipment specialist could save you a lot of headaches, and money.
5. CAN I SEE THE VEHICLE WITH MODIFICATIONS BEFORE I PURCHASE?
Absolutely! Typically, Jordan Ford will have several vehicles on hand to show you why a vehicle may or may not fit your needs.
6. FINANCE
Before purchase check out two things: Financial assistance and the cost of the vehicle. Whether it is the Veteran's Administration, your insurance company, worker's compensation, vocational rehabilitation, or a division of developmental services---Chances are funding may be available to help with the cost of the adaptive equipment. Keep in mind Jordan Ford can assist you in attaining special Mobility Rebates. With professional guidance this will lead you to an even more independent and productive lifestyle.
